I know we’ve all done it before! Either from our childhood home to college, apartment to apartment or apartment into home..by this time in our lives we’ve moved ourselves or have helped somebody move. I for one dislike moving, maybe because I have done it so many times. I wanted to tackle this topic today to give you all 6 ways to make packing and moving easy. I’ve started to use each of these methods and they have lowered the stress for my moves in the past. AND if you’re in the Houston, TX area I’ve got a surprise in store for you!
1. Make a Plan
This one may seem like a no-brainer but take on your space room by room. I mean really break it down. Depending on how big your place is you may start a week in advance to make sure the task is less daunting. Anyhow get a plan together, if the plan is to make the move on Saturday, start in the bedroom on Wednesday next the living room on Thursday and finally the kitchen on Friday. I say do the kitchen last because you’ll need to use that throughout the rest of the days you’re in the space. (Saving you a headace now ha!) Breaking the move down piece by piece automatically makes it more bearable.
2. Pull out all your stuff
Allllllright next tip, as you are going room by room start by pulling all your stuff out. This is going to do two things for you. One, it will allow you to see how much stuff you’ve accumulated over the time you’ve been in the space. I so desperately wish I could live a minimalistic way but my mind and my family will not let me live lol. A girl can dream though. Okay back to business, it will also allow you to place stuff in piles which is our next tip.
3. Put items in separate piles
This is a short paragraph but a heavy hitter in the moving process. Putting your stuff in separate piles is going to help you get organized amid the chaos of moving! Make a pile for your important documents, for your delicate pieces, etc.. These piles will give you a better picture of all the things you need to take versus those things you just WANT to take.
4. Throw stuff out
Now this tip can easily be one of the hardest depending on the type of person you are. For me it’s difficult. I’m the type that’ll say oh “I made need this one day.” Knowing good and well it needs to be dunked in the trash can. Haha! But as you see, this tip is straight to the point, throw stuff out! You guessed it, one of those piles should be labeled a throw out pile, and another one a giveaway pile. Both are guaranteed to reduce the load you’re taking to your next space.
I don’t want to get too off track with this sidenote, but I think it’s an important one. I follow this family on IG, they pretty much downsize to the bare minimum and start over with décor and set-up at the next space. When I saw that I thought it was genius! Moving into a new space requires you to start a new chapter regardless of the type of move. It is going to bring a sense of new energy. Which in my mind makes total sense why you need to ditch some of the things you currently have before entering a new space.
5.Utilize stuff around the house to move items
Once you’ve got your piles together you can start the boxing up and getting stuff ready to move. Now over the years I’ve gotten creative with moving certain things. I started to use my own stuff to pack to move rather than going out and getting the standard moving boxes for everything.
- Jackets, Shirts and other clothes – gather a bunch of hangers cut a hole in the bottom of a garbage bag, just enough to fit the hanger top. Put the garbage bag over the clothes, the bag will protect the clothes and also keep a group of them together. I especially love this one if I am using a big moving truck.
- Glasses, dishware, etc. – ask around for old newspapers in your neighborhood group or local stores (for yesterday’s of course) and wrap these around your glasses and dishes for protection.
- Also, look on Craigslist in the “free,” section for people getting rid of moving boxes. Why pay if somebody is giving them away?
6. Hire a moving company
This last tip is by far my favorite! I’ve come to a point in time where my time is more valuable to me so if it comes to it and you just want to make the move completely seamless and easy hire a moving company. Now if you’re in Houston, I told you in the beginning of the article I’ve got a treat for you and here it is!
